6 Healthy Essentials for Longevity

Over the past 25 years, we’ve had half a dozen clients make it to the age of 100. Thanks to advances in medicine, nutrition and lifestyle, the longevity trend is likely to continue. If you or a loved one wants to increase the odds of reaching the century mark and to do that leading a healthy, normal and happy lifestyle, here are six essentials for your consideration:
Let’s take them one at a time.
- Oxygen. Obviously we can’t live without it. If you go seven minutes without oxygen, your brain will die. Did you know that plants such as philodendrons and English ivy are excellent for removing benzene, formaldehyde and other carcinogens from the air? - Sunshine. In moderation, the sun’s rays can be beneficial for you. They’re an excellent source of vitamin D, which is often lacking for those of us who live in the North. - Exercise. Countless studies demonstrate the benefits of exercise. You need about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day, six times per week, to get the blood going and fully oxygenated. This helps remove toxins from your lymph system. You also need 30 to 80 minutes of weight lifting three times per week to rip your muscles and stress the bones. That’s essential for the body’s natural cell replacement process.
- Food. Try to avoid the “simple sugars” that are found in soda, desserts, candy, white rice, white breads, white pastas, etc. Complex sugars, found in fruit, vegetables and other raw foods, are better for you. It takes longer for your body to break them down and they help you maintain normal blood sugar levels, which minimizes the risk of diabetes and related illnesses. - Sleep. Experts say you need seven to nine hours a night. If you get fewer than seven hours, you’re not giving your body enough time to rejuvenate. On the flip side, if you need more than 10 hours of sleep per night, you might be suffering from depression.
