Change that “O” to an “E”
Key Takeaways
- As your wealth increases, life can become more complicated and frustrating.
- Redirect your energies into things that really matter in life—don’t waste time complaining about the small stuff you can’t control.
- Don’t think of your obligations as burdens—think of them as privileges or opportunities.
Remember our Open House on Wed. Nov. 9, 4-7 p.m. (Naples, FL, office)
A recent flight I took landed way ahead of schedule at O’Hare Airport. Instead of saving time, we ended up in the air traveler’s version of the “penalty box.” That’s a temporary holding area off the active taxiway where planes sit and wait until traffic congestion ahead of them clears.
Sure the delay was annoying, but I remember early in my career, my family and I once went six straight years without taking a vacation because we didn’t have the money or the time. Now I have the time and the money to take a short plane flight, rather than drive, to see my family. So that helped put the delay in perspective.
That reminds me of a story a man once shared with me about his childhood. He went to a friend’s house and asked his pal to come outside and play. His friend said, “But I got to take the garbage out!” The boy’s mother stopped her son in his tracks and said, “You don’t got to do anything. You get to take the garbage out. Son, there are people around the world who don’t have a house. They don’t even have food, so they don’t have any garbage to take out. Their life is horrible.” She went on to tell him that he needed to be more grateful for what he had and to change his attitude about helping out at home.
Change your perspective from Got to to Get to
As we become older and wealthier, life becomes more complicated. As our responsibilities and possessions increase, there are more variables to deal with and there are just too many things in life beyond our control.
Changing our outlook on life from Got to to Get to is such a simple thing. It redirects our energy into the areas we really want to spend more time with. We really don’t want to be complaining all the time about little things that, at the end of our lives, don’t really matter. It’s more important to focus our energies on the things that do matter and on the things we want to do. Changing that O to an E is a very simple but powerful way to redirect your energy and make life more fulfilling.
Speaking of making life simpler and more fulfilling, please come to our Open House next week at our new Naples, Florida, office at the SunTrust Building on Tamiami Trail.
Come check out our new digs and some cool new technology. We’ll have an estate planning attorney, a CPA and insurance specialists on hand to answer your questions.
Until the next time, enjoy.
