How Do You Communicate?
- When people are listening to others talk, they are typically not listening to understand, but to reply.
- When we really listen to someone, with our full attention, we get to know them better, and can better respond to where they are in their day.
- By listening more fully, you can save yourself time and money by being clearer on decisions, ultimately making your life a little simpler, easier, and more enjoyable.
There’s a great saying that says, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” It really highlights how you communicate, but specifically about how you listen. Most people don’t listen with the intent to understand. They are typically listening and building their reply in their head, so they are not fully engaged. It’s just a natural way we operate, thinking of ourselves first and others second.
When we really listen, when we are fully present with a person, paying attention to their demeanor and body language, then we have a much fuller communication that takes place. We get to know the person better. We can better respond to them where they are that day, because every day, we each wake up in a different place, in a different mood.
I find that as we go through life, dealing with important issues, building meaningful relationships with our friends and family, and just enjoying life to the fullest, it’s great to be able to listen fully and completely. It’s very helpful, especially as you are making decisions and moving through life, to know where someone is at.
I’m sure it’s happened to you before, where you end up making a decision because you weren’t clear about it. You spend a lot of money, waste a lot of time, and you’re really frustrated. If you had just listened a little more, with your full attention, you could have made a much better decision. You could have saved yourself the frustration, the money, and ultimately enjoyed life a bit more. I think that’s why many times, just really listening can be a quick shortcut to making life a little simpler and easier.
