The What, How, and Who

Key Takeaways

  • We’ve all been taught that when we have something we want to accomplish, to go about finding how to make it happen, but we can often get stuck spending a lot of time figuring it out.
  • Instead of asking, “How do I do that,” ask yourself, “Who do I know that can do the what that I want?”
  • By finding the right resources that can do your “how”, you free up your time to do more important things that only you can do.

Do you remember way back, maybe around the 4th grade, when you learned about interrogative words: who, what, when, where, and why? I want to focus on three of those words, the what, the how, and the who.

When we go to do something we’ve never done before, we know the “what” of what we are trying to accomplish. What we’ve been trained to do next however, is to say, “How do I do that?” As the world has become more interconnected, we’ve become much more specialized in what we do. For example, this video: I do very little of it myself. I have a whole bunch of other people who do all the “how” when it comes to making this video. So, instead of saying, “How do I do this?” I said, “Who do I know that can do the what that I want?

What this phrase does for me is focus me on finding those great resources, people, services, and companies that can do the “how” that I am looking for. If you don’t do that, you end up stepping in to “how” pies. You get in to the “how” and you are learning everything, all the new technology, the gritty details, and before you know it, you’ve wasted hundreds of hours and you’ve gotten nowhere because you’ve been “how-pieing” yourself all over the place.

Today, there are many ways to outsource the “how,” and it is much less expensive. There are a lot of “whos” out there, as you’ve seen in many of my previous posts, that can get the things done that you don’t have the time to learn. In fact, there are so many of these services and people out there, that I personally know many businesses where there’s the owner, and maybe one other full-time person, and they’ve got a team of 50 other people, none of which reside in their office, maybe not even on the same continent. But they are doing all of that “how” and putting out a phenomenal product or service that you love.

This is happening all over the place now, and it is just asking those questions a little different than our 4th-grade teachers taught us to ensure we are making the best use of our time and not getting stuck in the “how.”

Until next time, enjoy.
