Do You Live in the Moment?

Key takeaways

  • Living in the moment is a powerful practice and can insert meaning into every aspect of life.
  • Continuous learning opens up the world in a way that truly drives you forward as you go through life.
  • Take a moment to gaze at the stars tonight, watch the clouds go by tomorrow, and learn something new today.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” That’s a quote from Ghandi and it’s a great one. Now, it’s Labor Day or after and, traditionally, that’s when the kids are back at school.

Many years ago, this time of year was the last push in the business year to get new business and get things rolling. People also start thinking about their goals for the next year, so it’s kind of a reset point for everyone. And maybe your grandchildren or children are heading back to school and you’re back at work.

Just watching the clouds go by…

What’s this all about? Live as if you were to die tomorrow. The big message in that quote is about living in the moment. I think that doesn’t happen for a lot of folks. Instead, they focus on the many other things that have their attention—a lot of them negative. That doesn’t do much to help with living in the moment.

The other day somebody told me that he hadn’t looked at the clouds in probably 10 years. He went on to mention that he had been lying down in the backyard with his grandson, just watching the clouds and that it was the most peaceful thing he had done in what seemed like forever.

It’s an interesting story when you think about living in the moment, looking at the clouds—different things going by and so forth. Living in the moment happens in many areas of our lives. It happens when you’re actually enjoying whatever you’re doing with the person you’re doing it with right at that moment. It means you’re enjoying it to the fullest level and all the distractions have melted away.

Don’t stop believing—or learning

I really love the second part of the quote too: learn as if you were to live forever. It speaks to the truth that you’re a lifelong learner and we’re all lifelong learners. Think about all the learning we had to do in the first 20 to 25 years of life. It’s a massive amount of learning.

We made thousands upon thousands of mistakes and we grew tremendously from it. And then, just like that, at one point, some of us kind of shut that off and said, “I don’t have to do that anymore.”

The point is that human beings are meant to be in a constant state of growth and change. Our bodies change over time, but our minds do also and it affects where we are and how we move forward in life.

That said, I want to leave you with some information that’s been around for a while, but you might not realize it. There are free college courses available for seniors (here’s a link), which start at age 55. You can go through these courses and actually earn a degree—for free.

That might be something you want to look into. Maybe there’s an area you want to explore that you didn’t when you were younger. You majored in one area of study and then realized, later on in life, you wish you had studied something else that was very important to you.

So, live as if you were to die tomorrow and learn as if you were to live forever. Two great little things to remember. I think you’d have a great day if that were to happen each and every day. Until next time, enjoy.
